I'm seriously late in getting this report out, but this time my laziness wasn't the problem, but the internet connection I have a the camp has been so slow I couldn't upload any photos, which are a very important part of any HFC Report. I'm at home now, and here is what has been taking place the past couple of weeks.
The water level throughout the HFC area has risen six feet or more the past two weeks, and with this new water has come some great fish stories. The peacock bass and the payara are both beginning to feed heavily along the entire length of the La Paragua River channel, and thankfully, all my guides know the main spots the big'uns like to hang around. Spinnerbaits in the 1/2 and especially the 1 oz size have been the biggest producer of fish, while Rapala X-Raps, Yozuris, jigs, and the ever faithful live bait have also brought in their share of whoppers.
What makes this year different than most is that our fishing season is running about two month behind normal due to the late start to our annual rains, so get ready for some fantastic fish catches being report for the coming months by our clients. Topwater action is just now beginning to produce big fish, but that is going to change for the better with each passing day. Right now the Pavon Prop propeller bait and Super Spooks are only catching the occasional trophy.
We have also had some cancellations and trip date changes in the upcoming weeks for a variety of reasons, but this is good news for those of you wanting to come. We have both weekend and weekday trips available in the coming weeks, so just drop me a email stating your preference and the number in your group, and I can assure you we will do everything possible to arrange a special fishing experience for you.
I know it has been mentioned that when you get older, you tend to exhibit dramatic changes. This was found to be very true when Jim Good and Bobby Cole came fishing a couple of weeks ago. Right form the start I knew something was afoot with these two senior citizens, when instead of getting their rods and reels ready upon arrival, they both started pulling out short little trotlines. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not recall ever offering trotlining at HFC. Then they really shocked me by unloading sack after sack of fruit, which I figured was to just keep the two old farts regular, but lo and behold, the fruit was to bait their trotlines. It seems that during their previous trip to the camp they saw a local fisherman with some really big fish called "morocotto", which are a member of the piranha family, except that they eat predominately fruit rather than meat. The meat on these fish is a gourmet treat that must be tried to be fully appreciated.
Well, the next morning this two old fools go put their fifteen foot long trotlines in the river current, and the strange thing is that that hang it high enough that only the 10/0 hook with a piece of fruit on it is barely touching the water. This is the technique used on these fish be the locals. Then after returning from our morning fishing session, Bobby ran his three lines with me in the boat as a witness, and I'll be darn if he didn't have a 16 lb and 13 lb morocotto ready for netting. Shortly thereafter, while Booby and I were eating lunch at the camp, Jim arrives. I then spied Angel his guide bring up a big morocotto weighing in the neighborhood of 13 lbs or so. I also notice Jim's wife Ely had bypassed the dinbing area and gone straight to her room, which wasn't exactly normal. Then the truth came out. Jim sat down in the lounge area and began telling a tale of landing his big morocotto, and then suddenly he stopped and began to smile.
It seems that after chacking his empty lines, he had stopped by one of Booby's that we had rebaited. On one of them was the big morocotto Jim had brought in. The only reason he had g+fessed up about the true ownership of the fish was the fact Ely is a true God fearing woman, and his blatant thievery had shocked, shamed, and ultimately embarrassed her to thje point she wouldn't or couldn't stand to look Bobby in the eye. Jim knew if he didn't tell the truth, the chances of him enjoying his fishing trip another minute were mighty slim. Even after telling the truth, and going to his room to tell Ely he had done the right thing, it took considerable coaxing to get her the to come out in public. As atonement for his terible sin, Jim had to suffer having Ely beat him with larger peacock bass and payara than he caught.
To bring the episode to a happy ending, I thought I should say a few words concerning the incident during dinner that evening, and I must admit I did a great job. I told my staff to lock up the good silverware until Jim left, because I couldn't think of a worse thing to do than steal a man's fish off his trotline. During my little speach, Ely was nodding her head in agreement, while Jim was treatening to move up his crime spree to include murder.
Bobby Cole had come down with his Wife, linda, and just to show how bad his ,uck was running, she doen't even like to fish much, and she put a "whuppin" on the man. I'm talking about her landing seven fish over ten pounds one morning, while Mr. Lucky could only manage two little ones. A job well done, Linda.
After having finally gotten rid of the criminal element, the Brown family made another trip with us. David, Jana, Jesse, and Casey all caught good fish, as seen in the attached photos, and they lost some real whoppers to bad luck. I'm especially proud of Casey and Jesse, who both bested their previous big fish by several pounds. BRAVO!! Take a look at Jana's so called 12 lb fish, and then tell me you do not believe it is bigger. She must have had a bet with someone out there, because I think someone cheated her out of a few pounds.
Edwardo Rivas, son of HFC maintenence man, Ramon, decided to show that although small of stature, he could bring in a big one like the rest of us. He dang sure did that when he landed a 14 lb beauty while fishing with another young client named Rodwil, who also managed to land some really big fish, and in his own words declared he had had the best experience of his life. Double BRAVO!!
As I said earlier folks, the big fish are really biting, as you can readily see in the attached photos, AND WE HAVE OPEN DATES. So dust off the fishing equipemnt and come on down to Headwaters Fsihing Club to get your string stretched by one of our jumbo size fish.
Ya'll have a GREAT weekend!!!!
